According to surveys conducted by the Utah government, 41.5% of young people felt sad or hopeless for a period of two weeks or more. This can indicate a depressive mood disorder. 41.5% of youth feeling this way is a considerable increase from the 33% reported in 2017.
The Importance of Early Intervention
Early intervention is crucial in treating any disorder in adolescence. Research shows that the earlier an individual receives treatment, the better their chances of long-term recovery. Untreated mental health issues can lead to numerous adverse outcomes, including academic failure, physical health problems, and severe social impacts. At Basecamp Academy, we aim to intervene early and provide the necessary support to prevent these negative consequences.
Types of Mental Health Disorders We Treat
Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about various aspects of life, often without a specific cause. Individuals with GAD may experience symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances.
Panic Disorder: Panic Disorder involves recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, which are sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort. Symptoms may include palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, and a fear of losing control or dying.
Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia): Social Anxiety Disorder causes an intense fear of social situations where embarrassment or scrutiny may occur, leading individuals to avoid such situations. Symptoms include fear of social interactions, avoidance of social events, and physical manifestations like blushing or sweating.
Specific Phobias: Specific Phobias involve an intense, irrational fear of a specific object or situation that provokes immediate fear and avoidance. Common phobias include heights, insects, or flying, and symptoms can range from mild anxiety to severe panic attacks when confronted with the phobia trigger.
Mood Disorders
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Major Depressive Disorder is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness or loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable. Symptoms include depressed mood, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide.
Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar Disorder involves alternating periods of depression and mania (or hypomania). During depressive episodes, individuals experience symptoms similar to MDD, while manic episodes are marked by elevated mood, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, impulsivity, and risky behaviors.
Behavior Disorders
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Oppositional Defiant Disorder is characterized by a pattern of hostile and defiant behavior toward authority figures. Symptoms include frequent temper tantrums, arguments with adults, refusal to comply with rules, deliberately annoying others, blaming others for mistakes, and being easily annoyed or angered.
Conduct Disorder: Conduct Disorder involves persistent patterns of behavior that violate the basic rights of others or societal norms. Symptoms may include aggression toward people and animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness or theft, serious violations of rules, and a lack of empathy or remorse.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. Symptoms include difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play, easily distracted behavior, difficulty organizing tasks, excessive talking, fidgeting or squirming, and impulsivity such as blurting out answers or interrupting others.
These disorders can vary in severity and may require a combination of therapy, medication, and supportive interventions tailored to each individual’s needs. Early recognition and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes and supporting teen boys in managing these challenges effectively.
Our Treatment Approach
Every client undergoes a thorough assessment upon entering our program. This assessment includes medical evaluations, psychological assessments, and medical history. The information gathered helps us create a personalized treatment plan that addresses the unique needs of each individual.
Basecamp Academy is an adolescent residential mental health center in Utah. Our program provides 24/7 care and support to adolescents who struggle with their mental well-being. Inpatient treatment is recommended for teens with mental health disorders because it provides a structured, supportive environment that removes them from potential triggers and negative influences. This intensive setting ensures constant supervision and comprehensive care. Immediate access to professional support can significantly enhance the chances of successful recovery.
Individual therapy is a cornerstone of our treatment program. Adolescents work one-on-one with experienced therapists to identify thoughts and behaviors caused by a mental health disorder, develop coping strategies, and set personal recovery goals.
Group therapy sessions provide a supportive environment where adolescents can connect with peers who are facing similar challenges. These sessions promote a sense of community and shared experience, helping participants build social skills, empathy, and resilience.
We recognize the importance of education in the lives of adolescents. Our programs include academic support to help teens stay on track with their studies. We work closely with local schools to ensure a smooth transition back to academic life post-treatment.
Many adolescents with substance use disorders also struggle with co-occurring mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, or PTSD. Our dual diagnosis program provides integrated treatment for both substance use and mental health disorders, ensuring comprehensive care.
Recovery is a lifelong journey, and we are committed to supporting our patients even after they leave our facility. Our aftercare program includes ongoing counseling, support groups, and regular follow-up appointments. These help maintain mental health and continue personal growth.
